Jacob Smith worked long hours in the restaurant business for 10 years. He found himself missing time with his family so in October of 2010 he and his wife opened Sojourner’s Baked Subs off of Maple Avenue in Zanesville.
"I always wanted to run and have my own restaurant. They just always seemed like a great place to be, " said Owner and Chef Jacob Smith.
Their dressing, soups and most importantly, bread are all homemade.
"We get here turn the ovens on and start making bread. We are making bread from 8:30 until just after 11:00 because right now we are making 5 different kinds of bread, " said Smith.
Though it takes Smith hours daily, making the food from scratch has a perk because it is healthier for customers.
" When we do everything from scratch I can make things so much better than if I do the pre-mix, " answers Smith.
The creative names for the subs were inspired by the restaurants name that means "traveler". What is on the sandwich helps to explain its name.
"Harrisburg Pa is the largest producer of mushrooms in the US. and Harrisburg is the capital of Pennsylvania. Kind of makes sense that way. The Richmond, we use Virginia ham," explains Smith.
The Smith’s are grateful for the support they have recieved and want to give to the community so they offer a special for churches. Just come in with your church flyer and they will donate 10% of your purchase to the church at the end of the month.
On the walls is more community support; all of the paintings were created by local artist Nora Daniel.
Sojourner’s is open 7 days a week; Monday – Saturday 11:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. and Sundays from 12:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
