Zanesville, Ohio- A lot of people are wondering about the status of the new bridge on Military Road.

We stopped by Zanesville City Hall on Thursday to find out the latest on the project.

Chip Saunders, City Engineer for the City of Zanesville, said that they are now working on the restoration phase of the bridge.

“We’re just back filling the structure right now,” said Saunders.  “After that we have to finish the grading around the ends, put paving in, put the guard rails in, stripe the road and we will be able to open it back up,” said Chip Saunders.

The construction was originally projected to be completed by the end of this past October.

Saunders said due to the water flow in Joes Run creek and the multiple utilities on both sides of the bridge, this project has been difficult to complete.

“Joes Run is not your typical creek,” said Saunders.  “Theres always water in it and when we get rain from the north end, you cannot contain it.  We needed a dry environment to pour concrete in our footers of the bridge.”

Saunders ensures that the contractors have been working hard to complete the project on time, but he admits that they were a little aggressive on the original finish date.

Saunders said that they are looking at one to two more weeks of construction before the road is opened back up, weather permitting.
