Camp Wheeze-Away: A Breath of Fresh Air for Kids with Asthma

ZANESVILLE, OH – Rambo Memorial Health held their annual asthma camp, Camp Wheeze-Away, over the past two days, bringing joy and education to children aged 7 to 12.

This special camp is designed to help kids with asthma learn how to stay active and enjoy various activities safely. Throughout the two days, the campers enjoyed a mix of indoor and outdoor activities, from games and sports to crafts and educational sessions. The goal was to show that asthma doesn’t have to limit their fun or participation in everyday activities.

“We fish, we go on a splash pad, we do some activities that the kids don’t really realize are educational. They learn all about their asthma. Today, we’re back here at Rambo and the fire department came here, the Coco Cola semi is coming, and Muskingum Behavioral Health brings therapy dogs. In the afternoon, as a big treat for the kids, we go bowling,” Rambo Memorial Health Executive Director Shannon Bell said.

Camp Wheeze-Away continues to be a heartwarming success, providing valuable experiences and confidence to the kids, and a better understanding of how to manage their asthma.

“The biggest thing that we want kids with asthma to know is that they do not have to be excluded from anything. The way that our camp is set up, they get to bring a friend with them. Their friend also gets to learn about what it’s like to have asthma. It’s a whole educational process also,” Bell said.
