Ceremonial Plate Breaking Kicks off the Crooksville-Roseville Pottery Festival
CROOKSVILLE, Ohio —The 60th Annual Crooksville-Roseville Pottery Festival kicked off Thursday.
The festival opened with the traditional ceremonial plate breaking, followed by an auction featuring plates from Hull Pottery.
“60 years ago, two tall men got together between Roseville and Crooksville and started the pottery festival. It’s always been a tradition that there are 12 plates made, one of the plates is broken at the opening ceremony and then one is for them to keep. The other 10 are numbered and businesses or any individual can come by and bid on the plate. The money from the plates goes towards the pottery museum,” Queens Court Director Molly Fisher said.
The rest of the day was packed with activity. From food trucks and local vendors to fair rides and games, the festival offered something for all ages.
“A long time ago there were all these potteries. Industries change and everything, a lot of the potteries had fires that destroyed them. Our featured pottery this year is the Hull pottery of Crooksville, but their industry was lost due to a fire so all we can do is just continue our heritage and try to keep the festival alive,” Fisher said.
The celebration continues all weekend, highlighting the area’s proud pottery heritage and strong sense of community.
