CINCINNATI (AP) — Cincinnati renamed a park Tuesday in honor of a Cincinnati police officer who was shot and killed in the line of duty.

The city announced that East Hyde Park is now named Police Officer Sonny Kim Park during a private ceremony with his family, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported.

Kim was fatally shot while responding to a call in June 2015 after serving more than 27 years in the Cincinnati Police Department.

The newly named park is meant to honor the sacrifices Kim’s fellow officers and their families make every day, city officials said in a press release. The park is located near the police headquarters where Kim served for more than two decades.

Councilmember Amy Murray worked with the Cincinnati Recreation Commission to rename the park.

“Ultimately, we hope that every time we drive by this park or spend time there, we will be reminded to look for an opportunity to say thank you to our first responders who serve,” Murray said.
