City of Zanesville Receives Funding from Ohio Public Works Commission

ZANESVILLE, OH – The City of Zanesville recently was awarded a grant for a conservation project.

Mayor of Zanesville, Don Mason, said the total amount of the grant was $195,000 from the Ohio Public Works Commission.

Mason said the city is planning to use the funds to make the city a little greener.

“We received a grant to acquire property at, what most people would know as, the old Mace Carpet property.” Mason said. “And we’ll be developing it into additional parking and green space, and taking out the invasive species so that you can have a more high quality natural habitat.”

Mason said the goal is to rebuild and replenish West Main Street and to create a more attractive area.

He said this project also ties into current revenovations going on at the Gant Stadium.

“The playground equipment at Gant was old and antiquated and unsafe. We incorporated improving that area into our total plan of rebuilding Gant.” Mason said. “Again, our goal, is if we can bring more, in this case, baseball fans, if we put a softball field, if we put in either a co-ed soccer or flag football in. What we think we can do is, bring more people into this area of our town again for recreational purposes.”

Mayor Mason said the work on the new green space is projected to begin at the end of the year.
