City Taking Steps To Protect Drinking Water
The City of Zanesville is taking steps to protect its drinking water.
Geologist for the Source Water Protection Program, Steven Saines addressed Council and community members to discuss the Zanesville Water Source Protection Plan. The plan is put in place to assist the City in protecting its sources of drinking water, such as rivers and reservoirs, from contamination. There was contamination of the Muskingum River in the early 80’s due to the disposal of drums of contaminate beneath the ground. The plant was located near the Old Bloomer Candy Company and was known as United Technologies Automotive. The contaminates leaked into the river water and this is still an ongoing issue today. However, Saines stated that the well field has been considered safe for more than 30 years. At the end of the presentation, President of City Council, Dan Vincent and Mayor, Jeff Tilton were presented with a certificate. This was in recognition of the City making efforts to protect the drinking water of the community.
