College Students Should Practice Safety Tips When Returning To School

K through 12 students aren’t the only ones going back to school this week.

Colleges and Universities are now buckling down for the school year. Senior Public Relations Manager for AAA Ohio, Kimberly Schwind told us about some safety tips to keep in mind if you are commuting back and forth to school this year.

"Put an emergency roadside kit in your car." Said Schwind, "Make sure that there are things like water, non-perishable food items, a simple tool kit. Jumper cables, blankets, anything that you might need if you are stranded for an extended period of time."

Other tips include making sure you know how to complete basic car maintenance. That includes checking your tire pressure, oil, and other items that could potentially cause a break down. Knowing where your nearest trusted auto repair shop is also important to remember. Those living on campus should also keep these tips in mind along with other risks.

"Really it’s anybody that’s on a college campus has the risk of theft, fire, damage." Explained Schwind, "Things happen on college campuses so you really want to make sure that you’re protected."

Schwind said protecting yourself includes making sure you have insurance and taking any personal steps to keep your personal property safe. College students should always double up and go out together in groups, especially during hours after sunset.
