ZANESVILLE, OH – June is National Safety Month, and Columbia Gas of Ohio is reminding homeowners to leave natural gas projects to the professionals.

Whether it’s installing a furnace, replacing appliances, or working near gas lines, Columbia Gas says “don’t D-I-Y” when it comes to natural gas equipment. Officials say improperly handling gas appliances can create serious safety risks for families and homes.

“We ask people not to do it yourself when it comes to natural gas. In certain situations, natural gas can be flammable and if it’s not burning properly, it can cause carbon monoxide. Those are just two examples of safety concerns when dealing with natural gas.” Erica Chronaberry, Director of Communications for Columbia Gas of Ohio, said.

Columbia Gas says customers should contact a qualified contractor if they notice issues like yellow flames, overheating appliances, soot around burners, or furnaces frequently turning on and off. They also recommend making sure all equipment is properly vented and professionally adjusted for safe operation.

“We never want our customers to do anything themselves when it comes to natural gas. The way I like to remind people about this is, why do you go to a licensed doctor to perform a medical procedure?  Because they’re trained, they’re educated, and they have experience. It’s the same thing when it comes to working with natural gas. You need someone who is qualified, who has been trained, and who has experience to work around natural gas.” Chronaberry said.
