ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Muskingum County is aiming to capitalize on its tourism.

The Muskingum County Commissioners met with members of the Zanesville Muskingum County Convention and Visitors Bureau to hear how the recent implementation of the short term rental tax is working.

“The meeting with the commissioners this morning was over the short term rental bed tax, a 7 percent bed tax. And the reason for the meeting, we are working together to make this as streamlined as a process as possible for our short term rental owners. We want to make payment options as easy as possible and as clear as possible and just discussing some of those processes,” Convention and Visitors Bureau Manager Jordin Harmer said.

The short term rental tax resolution was initiated in June and the county is still ironing out various issues around the billing process, such as: postal versus online, scheduling, and tracking.

“Future steps: we do plan on implementing an online payment system, making that streamline for the short term rental owners to pay,” Harmer said. “And then also we’re upping our marketing efforts to highlight and promote their short term rental locations.”

Harmer noted that for the majority of newly taxed business owners, the implementation has been mostly positive and that many are excited to see the improvements that the revenues are aimed to bring.
