Community Supports Local Man Battling Cancer
Rick Burkett was diagnosed with Lung Cancer in March and June 27 his family and friends stood with him in his battle.
Over 200 people attended the a cancer benefit for him. It featured a spaghetti dinner and various items for sale in a silent auction and T-shirts that read ‘It won’t take me alive.’ All proceeds will help Burkett pay for medical bills as he is unable to work.
“I’m not allowed to work and insurance doesn’t pay to be off of work and it’s hard to make it when you don’t have no income coming in,” said Burkett.
Burkett said that today showed how lucky he is to be surrounded by the people that are in his life.
“Makes me feel pretty good inside,” said Burkett. “Shows you what our communities like, how good your friends are.. just people in general. This town’s good for that.”
The benefit took place at the VFW on Putnam Avenue. Burkett hopes to hear more about the next step in his journey in the next four to five weeks.
