Cooling Center Locations Open

The United Way and the Red Cross are coming together to help people stay cool during this heat wave.

Cooling stations are opening at Christ’s Table, Salvation Army, Muskingum County Center for Seniors and Morgan County Senior Center.  United Way Executive Director Meg Deedrick said when temperatures get close to triple digits, it’s a major safety concern.

"It becomes more than just uncomfortable, it can become dangerous," said Deedrick.  "It’s dangerous for the elderly, for children, for people with health conditions and anybody who isn’t well hydrated.  We want to provide options for folks who may not have air conditioning."

Red Cross Executive Director Marlene Henderson said there’s always a possibility of a power outage in such extreme heat, and if that were to happen, the organization would provide a shelter for those in need.

"Usually we think of sheltering in the winter after a snowstorm, but we always have to be prepared for that no matter what," said Henderson.
