Corn Survives Rain this Summer
The summer season saw rain but corn consumers can breathe easy because fresh sweet corn made it through the wet and Farmers Market Manager Mark Barnhart said he just picked some of the best of the best from his crop.
“This corn could have used a little bit of rain,” said Barnhart. “It’s a little bit smaller but this is the best corn we saw the year. It’s serendipity. It’s really sweet and really tender. ”
While the corn was resilient, some other produce didn’t survive the rain fall that we saw this summer.
“Rain spreads a lot of disease and then between the rain and the wind tomatoes are dying,” said barnhart. “Pickles have died. There’s other plantings but we haven’t got near the pickings from them that you would expect to get. The yield is really down. Corn hasn’t been too bad. ”
Barnhart also said that if you’re waiting to can in the fal you may be too late as second and third plantings didn’t get made this season which could mean shortages.
