The Zanesville First Church of the Nazarene hosted the Zane Trace District Cub Scout Pinewood derby Saturday.

Over 40 scouts, with more than 140 family members and Scouting volunteers from Muskingum, Perry and Morgan Counties participated in the event held by Cub Scout Pack 121 from Dresden.

The Nashport pack nearly swept the event taking four of the five event trophies. Kenton Casey from Pack 137 in Duncan Falls received the fifth-place trophy. Will Renaud from Pack 174 in Nashport took home the fourth-place trophy; Alex Cavanaugh, of Pack 174, brought home the third-place trophy; Caden Blake, of Pack 174, earned the runner-up spot, and Brayden Ross Kurtz representing Pack 174 gained every point possible by winning every race, won the event.

The Pinewood Derby gives Cub Scouts an opportunity to create a custom racecar from a block of wood and compete against their pack-mates and other Scouts throughout the district.

Pinewood Derby Cars have no means of propulsion and rely on gravity to gain their speed and a fast Pinewood Derby car can reach a top speed in excess of 200 miles per hour.

The first Pinewood Derby was run at the Manhattan Beach Scout House near Los Angeles California in 1953 and in 2006 the event was included in the Reader’s Digest, Best of America list as “A celebrated rite of Spring.”
