Data Shows Food and Utility Assistance Needed in Local Community

Food and utility assistance continue to account for an overwhelming percentage of 211 calls in our area.

In the month of November, food assistance accounted for almost half of the calls made in Muskingum County. Community Impact Director Becky Clawson said the United Way is looking at the continuing numbers closely and trying to come up with solutions to the hunger problem but she said November’s numbers have a victory worth mentioning.

“One of the great successes that we have seen looking at the numbers from last year to this year is that the pantry information calls have been drastically reduced so people know where they can go get this assistance and they know where this food and resources are available to them,” said Clawson.

Although it’s been unusually warm lately, the cold weather is fast approaching and Clawson wants to remind those in need of assistance 211 calls can provide information to meet many different needs.

“A lot of people, I think, know about the food assistance and those sort of services but as we move into colder months we also offer information for school closings, winter weather hazardous alerts, those sort of things, as well as any crisis that you may experience,” said Clawson.

Those seeking assistance through 211 can simply dial 2-1-1 but if the call isn’t completed dial 1 (800) 544-1601.
