Demolition Bid Opening
ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The Muskingum County Land Reutilization Corporation, also known as the Land Bank, has awarded an Ohio contractor with the asbestos removal of five dilapidated residential properties within the City of Zanesville that are slated for demolition.
Land Bank Executive Director Andy Roberts explained how many of the land bank’s blighted property projects are often chosen in lieu of the extra costs associated with the handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
“We had five residential properties that needed asbestos remediation done,” Roberts said. “We had them surveyed for asbestos earlier in the year. This bid was to go through and get all the asbestos taken out of these properties prior to demolition.”
Roberts noted that the Land Bank uses monies allocated through grants to demolish these properties that have been deemed beyond repair and that they are oftentimes the biggest eyesore in their neighborhoods.
“According to the State of Ohio, all properties have to be surveyed for asbestos,” Roberts said. “If it does turn up that there are asbestos-containing materials in them, we have to go through and abate that asbestos before we demolish their entire property.”
During the latest dilapidated property survey conducted by the Land Bank, eight structures were inspected and five of them contained asbestos.
Erie Environmental with a bid of $9,470 was awarded the contract to clean up the five properties, which are:
1211 Greenwood,
158 Green,
46 Green,
1256 Wheeling,
1213 Ridge.
