Disabled American Veterans Honor Those Lost at Sea for Memorial Day
ZANESVILLE, OH- A ceremony on the Muskingum River honored fallen service members this Memorial Day. The local chapter of the Disabled American Veterans continued its tradition of remembering those who never made it home.
The tribute took place aboard the Lorena Sternwheeler in Zanesville, where veterans and community members gathered to toss wreaths into the Muskingum River.
“We’re hoping that they are resting in peace in the waters of the world,” said Commander Dr. David Schroder.
Each wreath cast into the river served as a reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made by so many who served their country on ships and never returned. Organizers say the ceremony is a way to ensure their memory doesn’t fade.
“We need to remember that the things we enjoy here in America came at a cost, that some people had to die in order to preserve and achieve what we have now,” said Schroder.
The annual tradition is part of a broader effort by the Disabled American Veterans to honor all veterans, including those lost at sea. They plan to continue the ceremony for years to come.
