Dive in for Diabetes

Diabetes is on the rise in the US and Sunday at Rosecrans High School the community literally dove into raising awareness.

It’s called Swimming for Diabetes. Participants raised money through pledges and showed up to show off their strokes. Among them was 14 year old Isaiah who has type one diabetes. Isaiah along with other swimmers were also impacted by the disease.

"Both my daughters, they are twins, and they have had diabetes since they were 13 months old and they are 20 now so, raising the awareness is very important to me," said Support Lisa Girton.

Raising two children with diabetes poses a challenge. This challenge is what made Girton decide to have an event like this. She says people need to know just how many lives diabetes impacts and how hard living with the disease can be.

"When they were young they had to have 3-4 shots of insulin a day and test their blood sugar about 4-5 a day and now, they have an insulin pump that regulates it a little more but, they still have to have insulin at all time," said Girton.

Money from the swim will partially go towards a diabetes summer camp. The event looks to raise around $4,000.
