Don’t Forget to ‘Fall Back’ and Stay Safe: Time Change Reminder to Check Smoke Detectors

ZANESVILLE, OH – It may be time to turn the clocks back an hour and catch a couple of extra Z’s, but it’s also a time to make sure you and your family are safe.
This Sunday we fall back an hour, meaning we get an extra hour added to the day around 2AM. Kai Mayle, a Firefighter with the Zanesville Fire Department, said it’s also time to check your smoke detectors batteries.
“As the time change comes, it’s also a good time to change and check the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors,” Mayle said. “You should be checking them at least once a month, but there are 10 year alarms that don’t need their batteries changed.”
Mayle also suggests replacing your smoke detector every ten years. He said it’s important to check your equipment so you’re not caught off guard.
“It’s important to check them and make sure they are working correctly.” Mayle said. “Just in case something bad were to happen.”
If you are in need of a smoke alarm or a carbon monoxide detector, contact your local fire department.
