Dresden Elementary Students Explore the Underground Railroad
Local students are using their school project to learn the history of the Underground Railroad.
In honor of history day, 3 Dresden Elementary students visited Putnam Presbyterian church to learn more about the struggles slaves endured while they made their way to freedom.
"We’re just really curious. We wanted to see how things were back then," said Samanta Huffman.
"I learned that it was just really hard for the slaves to have to go through with their punishments so they just escaped and they had to go through more harsh things," said Gabby Emerson.
"I learned more about a tunnel that they used to go from here to the river and other historical places," said Abigal ‘Abby’ Stanford.
The students explained their experience after touring the tunnel.
"It’s scared me of how the slaves would feel if they were down there having to be in the dark and frightening," said Stanford.
"When we went down into the basement it was so cool. We got to see where slaves would be kept and that was pretty amazing," said Emerson.
"The experience was just different because, we got to see what the slaves have to endure and go through with," said Huffman.
The students wants to thank their teacher Ms. Orr as well as Putnum Presbyterian church for helping them with their project.
