Fall Safety Days Cover Domestic Violence Awareness

Statistics say 1 in 3 women and 1 and 4 men experience a form of domestic violence in their lifetime.

In Muskingum County Dorothy Thomas said she advocates for almost 500 victims a year. Thomas spoke with students at Ohio University Zanesville Monday as part of their two day fall safety educational series. Thomas said that it’s important for college age students to be aware that domestic violence is prevalent in today’s society as they begin serious adult relationships.

“Who wants admit they’re a victim? Nobody,” said Thomas. “That’s not something we want to go around telling people. ‘yeah I got beat up last night.’ so I think it’s the hidden issue. Nobody wants to discuss it but I think the more people learn about domestic violence and what is considered domestic violence..hopefully it educates people that there is hope out there. ”

Thomas spoke with students about not only how to detect domestic violence in their own relationships but how to help a friend in need of support during a domestic violence situation.

“Sometimes just talking and knowing that there’s help out there gives them that initiative to want to do something and get out of it,” said Thomas.

As the safety days continue students will get the opportunity to learn about internet safety, title nine issues, and workplace safety as well.
