Fatal Accident in Fairfield County

Fairfield, OH- A 23-year-old Ashville man was killed Sunday afternoon during a traffic accident in Fairfield County.

It took place on US 33 in Berne Township. The State Patrol said Austin Mathias was traveling east when his vehicle was struck from behind by 21-year-old Quinlan McCabe of Logan.

Authorities said Mathias’ vehicle was forced off the right side of the road, where it struck a traffic sign post and overturned. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

McCabe was taken to Fairfield Medical Center, evaluated and released.

The patrol said McCabe failed to maintain assured clear distance and the crash remains under investigation.
