Firework Safety Tips for the 4th of July

ZANESVILLE, OH – As the 4th of July approaches, fireworks light up our excitement just as much as they light up the sky.

Before you reach for that sparkler or set off a dazzling display, it’s important to remember that safety should always come first. Fireworks can add magic to Independence Day festivities, but it’s crucial to handle them responsibly to prevent accidents and injuries.

“We’ve seen brush fires. We’ve seen houses catch fire and injuries from the explosions as far as the hands, face, eyes, anything like that,” Zanesville Firefighter Ryan Saegert said.

To avoid accidents, it’s important to maintain a safe distance when igniting fireworks. The fire department advises to keep a bucket of water nearby in case of a fire, and having a phone handy is also a good idea, in case of emergencies.

“No one under the age of 18 should be setting off fireworks. No alcohol or drugs should be involved. You want to maintain a 150-foot distance from any spectators or buildings. Keep some water close by to avoid a brush fire,” Saegert said.

If you’re involved in any firework accidents that include fire or injury, don’t hesitate to call 911 immediately.
