Fireworks & Your Pet’s Hearing
If you plan on taking your pets with you to the Stars and Stripes on the River or any other fireworks show, Muskingum County Animal Shelter Executive Director, Larry Hostetler, says you need to know how your pets will react to the loud noises.
He says not all pets behave in the same manner.
“Some dogs are fine with the loud noises and fireworks, and other dogs can get really scared. It can be very upsetting to them, ” says Hostetler.
Hostetler says a dog’s hearing is about five times more intense than a human’s hearing, and Hostetler says it is possible to cause damage to the ears.
“If they were up close enough, yes. Just like humans, they can damage the ear drum, ” says Hostetler.
Hostetler says it’s best to follow the rule: If it’s going to bother you, it’s going to bother your pets.
