First “March for Vets”

First "march For Vets"

Veteran’s Day is a time to honor our military men and women for making the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

One local vet started a new tradition this year to support our heroes in uniform. Justin Smith, along with dozens of community members, took to the streets of Zanesville Wednesday morning for the first to be annual “March For Vets.” Smith said all money raised will benefit the Wounded Warrior Project, an organization that aims to empower injured vets and their families.

“I want to do this every year now, next year I will pick a different organization to go through, to donate the money, but this is going to be an every year deal,” Smith said.

The route began at the VFW post on Putnam Avenue and supporters continued marching for five miles, until they reached Colony Square Mall. Zanesville resident, Diane Elson’s father is World War II vet, and hopes her efforts will bring about change in veteran’s affairs moving forward.

“I just hope that things like this bring to forefront, to the government, to the state, or whoever, that we really need to help our vets,” Elson said.

If you missed Wednesday’s march and still wish to donate to the Wounded Warrior Project, you can mail your contribution to 258 Oak Street, Duncan Falls, OH 43734.
