Servicemen and women are being recognized for the sacrifices they’ve made for our country.
The Flags of Honor is a traveling display of flags representing Ohioans killed in action in Iraq and Afghanistan. Today those flags are flying at Zane’s Landing Park. Coordinator Bud Johnson said thousands of people will pay respect to Ohio’s 260 fallen heroes.
"We rope off a section up there called the honor section, and that’s where the flags are for the ones that we’ve lost," said Johnson. "They’ll have their name, rank and branch of service on it. We bring the families up to the microphone, the reader shouts out the name and they come into the honor section to put the flags on one of the posts."
The Flags of Honor was started by a couple from Columbus who lost their son in Iraq on Memorial Day 2004. Johnson said he can’t bring back the lives lost overseas, but he does his best to honor their service.
"This generation is doing what all previous generations have done in the United States of America," said Johnson. "Each generation has stepped up to protect the freedom of this country."
The exhibit will remain open until 1 p.m. on Sunday.
