Flood Safety

From Arkansas to Oklahoma, flooding has recently devastated numerous areas around the country, and it could happen here. Tonight we have some important tips that could save your life.

The Muskingum Valley Red Cross says it takes no time for water to rise to dangerous levels. If you live in a flood-prone area, the key is being prepared and having a plan.

"You need to be prepared to leave very quickly because flash floods can happen within minutes so you should have a kit ready to grab and go, a disaster kit that has some canned food, water, extra change of clothing, batteries, a radio," says Director of Preparedness and Response, Julie Davis.

The Red Cross also urges people to pay attention to weather reports, and never to drive into rushing water, which can have deadly results.

"The big motto is turn around don’t drown, and that really is important you know. Don’t think that you can risk it and get through there because that may be the time that the undercurrent grabs you and starts dragging you downstream and you get trapped and you may drown," says Davis.

If flooding is severe, you may have to move to the second floor of your home or even the roof. Having a proper escape plan is always a good idea.
