Flu Cases Surge in Muskingum County

ZANESVILLE, OH – Flu season is here, and health officials say cases are on the rise.

The Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department reports 84 flu-related hospitalizations so far this season. Officials say the numbers are higher than this time last year, and they expect cases to continue rising.

“Flu season in our area mirrors what we see in the state and nationally. We have numbers that are considered to be very high. For example, we’ve had 84 hospitalizations this flu season for influenza compared to last year where we had 95. Last year was 95 for the whole flu season we’re at 84 all ready. So, it’s considered very high,” ZMCHD Medical Director Dr. Jack Butterfield said.

One of the best ways to prevent the flu is by getting a flu shot. Officials also say that if you’re feeling sick, staying home can help prevent the spread of the virus. If you do get sick, they recommend rest, staying hydrated, and monitoring symptoms.

“The standard recommendations have not changed for decades. Stay home if you’re sick. Take care of yourself. Stay well hydrated. Get plenty of rest. Treat your symptoms with Ibuprofen, Tylenol, or something like that for fever and body aches. If you have severe symptoms, like a high fever, you should seek medical attention,” Dr. Butterfield said.
