Follow Up Report On The Case Of Bacterial Meningitis
ZANESVILLE, Ohio-Â We have a follow up report on the case of bacterial meningitis at Muskingum University we told you about last night.
Muskingum County Health Department Nursing Director Carol Hodwyshell said we are in good standing because of Muskingum University’s fast thinking and quick response.
“They identified the people that were close exposures and they were all treated prophylactically. For a case of sever disease as this one everything happened very timely. Very quickly. Great team work. Those who needed the antibiotics or prophylax got it. The incubation period for this germ is 3-7 days. Now we just wait to see if another case shows up. And hopefully we will not see it,” said Howdyshell.
Early symptoms of meningitis are high fever, cough, headache or a stiff neck. A late sign is a red or purple rash.
“For this community one of the preventative measures is to get vaccines to help protect against this. If anybody follows the news Senator Hite had a Senate Bill pass, Senate Bill 121. So that the meningococcal are going to be required starting 2016- 2017 school year for 7th graders and senior, ” said Howdyshell.
Howdyshell encourages everyone to contact your primary care provider with any questions or concerns.
