Former Zanesville City Councilman Dies
A Zanesville man who is credited with breaking the color barriers at a local bowling alley has died. 93-year-old Sam Mitchell Sr., who also served on Zanesville City Council for 9 years, died this week. Once he was discharged from the Air Force in 1947 he relocated to Zanesville where he served as service manager for the Coca Cola Bottling Company. He also worked a Dutro Ford for 21 years. Mitchell was also an ordained deacon at United Baptist Church in 1963. He was also active in the community serving on many organization including the United Way, Zanesville Community Center and Habitat for Humanity. Calling hours are Friday at 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at the St Paul A.M.E. Church where services will follow at Noon. Mitchell will be laid to rest in Woodlawn Cemetery with full military honors.
