Genesis Brings Awareness to ATV and UTV Safety

ZANESVILLE, OH — Although it is getting colder, the Genesis Healthcare System wants to bring awareness to light utility vehicle safety.
Riding on these vehicles is a great way to enjoy good weather, however it is important to remember the safety precautions when operating them. Operations manager for Genesis community ambulance, Brad Gibson, sat down to talk about how prevalent ATV and UTV accidents are in our area.
“I would say during the warmer times of the year they’re fairly common. I do know this year alone we have had two fatal accidents involving UTVs. During the warmer months [it’s] something for everybody to do together and do and have fun together, which ultimately leads to more accidents,” said Gibson.
Gibson says that the recommended age to operate these light utility vehicles is above 16 years of age. To maintain proper safety he asks that drivers do not partake in drinking alcoholic beverages while operating these vehicles.
“In UTVs, I think everybody gets into the habit of being in a roll cage, so they don’t think that they need a helmet or to wear safety belts but I think those two are probably the biggest things when they are riding in a UTV to remember. You should still wear a helmet to protect your head,” said Gibson.
