ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Hospice care provides specialized end of life assistance that helps families support their loved ones during their time of need

Genesis Healthcare System broke ground on a new hospice facility this morning that will be standing where Good Samaritan Hospital used to be, by late fall of next year.

“We are doing the groundbreaking for the new Straker House. This is our new in-patient hospice house and it is replacing the Morrison House. So it is the only in-patient hospice program in this entire region. And… we needed a new facility and our community came together to raise about $7 Million dollars in donations to make this new facility a reality,” Genesis Healthcare System CEO Matthew Perry said.

The facility is aimed to better serve both the hospice in-patient and home care staffing by providing them a mutual base of operations. It will also better accommodate the patients and their families by offering greater privacy and larger rooms.

“The new facility was absolutely critical because our older facility is literally on its last year of viable use,” Perry said. “It is a bigger facility, there’s a lot more room inside for patients and their families in each room and it gives the staff resources and the systems to be able to take care of our patients in the wonderful way that they do every single day.”

Perry specifically expressed his gratitude to the Straker Foundation for their monetary donations along with the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity who provided the property. He is also grateful to all of the sponsors throughout the community whose contributions are bringing this project to life.
