Get Ready to Witness the Total Solar Eclipse

ZANESVILLE, OH – Get ready to mark your calendars because something totally out of this world is happening next month.

On April 8th, a total solar eclipse will sweep across Ohio. Spectators within a 124-mile-wide band will be treated to this once in a lifetime opportunity to witness the moon totally block out the sun.

“This eclipse will be one of the largest tourist destinations in the world because it’s going to be lasting over three minutes, many times they’re not that long. Ohio is going to be invaded with people from all over, over a million, maybe two million,” Keynote Speaker, Irene Baron said.

To ensure you’re prepared to make the most out of this rare viewing, the Zanesville Astronomy Club has teamed up with the Ohio University Zanesville to host a special community event. On Thursday, March 7th at the Elson Hall Auditorium at OUZ at 6pm, you can learn all about the solar eclipse, from what to expect during the sighting to how to safely view it without harming your eyes. Everyone who attends will receive a pair of solar eclipse glasses.

“The lens in your eye focusses light that comes into the retina. If you’ve ever taken a magnified glass and burnt a piece of paper with the sunlight, the same thing happens to your eye. It is so hot it will burn the retina,” Baron said.

The solar eclipse event is open to the public. For more information, visit the Ohio University Website.
