Gov. DeWine Recognizes Perry Elementary School as Science of Reading Champions
ZANESVILLE, OH – Ohio Governor Mike DeWine made a stop at Perry Elementary School today to celebrate a recent award.
Gov. DeWine, in collaboration with the Department of Education and Workforces, created the Governor’s Science of Reading Award to highlight schools that are demonstrating strong implementation of evidence-based instructional practices.
DeWine said it’s exciting to see the children be able to grasp bigger concepts at younger ages.
“We’ve rolled out the Science of Reading all over the State and some schools are at one stage, some at another, but now we have all our schools that are moving forward with the Science of Reading,” Gov. DeWine said. “We know that it makes a big, big difference. This is how kids really, it’s based on how kids really learn to read and how everyone learns to read.”
DeWine has traveled to a few schools across the State as he presents these awards, he says it’s been amazing to see the kids engaged and excited to be learning.
He said by implementing the Science of Reading, it will help to better prepare students for high school as well as college.
“The real reason that we had to do this and make it uniform throughout the whole State is that some of our schools and some of our education schools, some of our colleges have really gone off another pathway,” DeWine said. “They thought that was the right way to do it and now we know, now its, I’m an old County Prosecuting Attorney, used to be a Prosecutor when I was a young kid, and the jury’s back, we have a verdict. We know that the Science of Reading is the best way to teach kids how to read.”
