Coshocton, OH- American-made stainless steel is getting an upgrade thanks to a new $150 million stainless steel bright anneal line at Cleveland-Cliff’s Coshocton works.

On July 2, U.S. Senator Jon Husted, Governor Mike DeWine and the Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose cut the ribbon to celebrate the operation of the new line. The new line will feature a 100% hydrogen atmosphere and a recovery unit to recycle hydrogen.

“In places like Coshocton, the America first strategy, the tariffs, the big beautiful bill, this is what it means to them,” Senator Husted said. “That you’re going to see more investment in this country, that’s going to lead to great jobs for them. These jobs are wonderful, high paying jobs where you can leave the local career center, get a job here, support your family and lead a great quality of life in a great community like Coshocton.”

The update will allow the North-American based company a more competitive edge in international markets according to President and CEO of Cleveland Cliffs Inc., Lourenco Goncalves. Governor DeWine and Senator Husted believe that increased competition can mean better job security and increased opportunities for local production.

“You know I think it’s important that we manufacture steel in the United States because it’s a question first of all of national security,” Governor DeWine said. “One of the things that we found during the pandemic is we just have to make more things in the United States. And that fits perfectly with Ohio. We are a manufacturing state, we have always been a manufacturing state, we have great workers. So what we see today, a huge, huge multi-million dollar investment in an older plant but with a new line, taking the best technology to make steel.”

Even with the $150 million price tag, the pay off is predicted to be well worth the cost according to Goncalves.
