Greenwood Cemetery Memorial Day Service

ZANESVILLE, OH – Memorial Day honors those who have lost their lives in active military service and Greenwood Cemetery a ceremony in honor of our fallen heroes. At 11 Monday morning, people came together to pay respect who payed the ultimate price for their country.

“Remembering those that went before and what they sacrificed so that can have the freedom to do the thing that we are able to do these days,” said Renee Bonifant, the adjutant for the local chapter of Disabled American Vets.

For some of those who took part in todays ceremony, their emphasis was on not only honoring those veterans but also reminding the public what it means to serve.

“Too often, what’s out of sight, out of minds but the goal of everyone here is to remind the country of the sacrifices that our men and women have made to keep this country to be what it is,” said Ronny W. Dower, the president of the local chapter of Sons of Revolution.

For some of the people in attendance, this holiday was in remembrance of specific people they served with who didn’t get to come home like they did.

“I remember the guys I served with in Vietnam who didn’t come home. One of them was an Ohio man and he was able to go and meet his wife on R and R in Hawaii and three months later he was killed and she was three months pregnant. So it wasn’t just the veteran that suffered it was his family, his daughter, he was an awful nice guy,” said David Schroder, president of the local Disabled American Veterans chapter.
