High water levels on Muskingum River

The Muskingum River water levels are high due to the recent weather.
The river has frozen over and parts of the river has ice breaking up. Some houses near the water have had some flooding due to the high water. Washington Township Fire Department Fire Chief Gene Hanning said everyone is safe and there have been no injuries. He said there is no mandatory evacuation in place at this time.
Earlier on January 13th, according to it’s Facebook page, the Dresden Fire Department responded to cabins along the Muskingum River off of N River Rd E. People were trapped in cabins due to the high water. Everyone was able to be removed without any injury. Deputy Director Chris Farmer said there is no immediate threat with the Ellis Dam, but it is being monitored.
The Morgan County Emergency Management Agency also issued a statement about the ice on the Muskingum River: “We are currently gathering information and monitoring reports of ice dam issues on the Muskingum River. There is a report of a major ice damming north of Zanesville. WE are awaiting confirmation from Muskingum County. Also the Muskingum has risen sharply in the last hour at McConnelsville gauge. Anyone in flood prone areas needs to be aware that there could be a swift rise in the river and should make preparations at this time. We will continue to provide updates and will issue advisories/warnings as warranted. Please remain alert and monitor the situation.”
