Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day

If you’ve been waiting to clean out your basement or garage, there’s a way to get rid of some junk that’s too toxic to put in the trash.

Muskingum County is holding a household hazardous waste collection day.  Public Service Director Mike Sims said the event helps protect the environment.

"You have leachate material coming out of the landfills, and if it’s any type of hazardous waste or pesticide, it could get into the receiving streams and cause additional pollution," said Sims.

Hazardous waste items being accepted include cleaning products, batteries, paint, used oil, pool chemicals and fireworks.  Items not being accepted include business and school waste, smoke detectors, radioactive materials and tires.

"The company is Southeastern Ohio Joint Solid Waste Management District, and they do all the sorting with us," said Sims.  "We will have a group of volunteers that will direct traffic, help load or unload and then the workers for the company picking it up will do the sorting."

The service is free and only open to residents of Muskingum County.  The collection day will take place at the Ohio University Zanesville/Zane State College parking lot on August 4th.
