Housing community keeps patriotism alive

Memorial Day Celebration 1

ZANESVILLE, OH- The third annual Melody Lake Memorial Day Celebration took place today on the Melody Lake Island.

This event serves as a way for people in the community to come together and honor veterans who are living and deceased for their service to America.

“I feel that patriotism has to be nurtured and I get concerned, we older people we care because a lot of our relatives served in the wars did time, but I’m concerned about the younger people,” event organizer Linda Stiers said.

The event began with pastor Andy Winters who read a message on the importance of patriotism in America. He then did a reading of veterans’ names that were submitted by people who attended the event. There was also patriotic music followed by a gun salute.

“People ask me why I was putting out so many flags when I started doing this by myself around the lake and I said, I want to teach people patriotism, be proud you are an American, we are so lucky to live in this country, it’s a wonderful place and we have a little gift here in our neighborhood,” Stiers said.

Stiers plans to host the event again in May of 2025 to continue to share the importance of patriotism in America.
