International Peace Walk
A peace group is walking more than 1,000 miles and to try and spread the word about a nuclear free future.
"Footprints For Peace" walkers passed through Zanesville Thursday to raise awareness about ending nuclear energy. Marcus Atkinson a "Footprints for Peace" organizer has been walking since February 11th and says it’s to support a free nuclear future.
"We started walking from the Y-12 nuclear weapons facility in Oakridge Tennessee and we’re walking up to new York to take part in the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty review conference at the United Nations conference that will begin on May 3rd. I think we’re at a situation globally where we will either start disarming nuclear weapons or we will enter a nuclear arms," Atkinson said.
Atkinson believes governments around the world should be using the money that’s going toward nuclear power to the technology of using renewable energy like solar power. So as they walk toward the United Nations in New York they take time to tell people about the issue.
"In New York on the 3rd of May the United Nations will begin the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty review conference that happens every five years. So there will be a contingency of people from all around the world that will be gathering in New York from the 3rd of May to the end of May to pressure the government and the United Nations to really take strong steps toward nuclear disarmament," Atkinson said.
Atkinson said through the past six weeks they have had a lot of support and expect a lot of people to meet them in New York.
