Local Law Enforcement Agencies Work Together to Combat Impaired Driving

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The Ohio State Highway Patrol is announcing a new service initiative with assistance from local law enforcement. This service initiative will take place from August 31 through October 11 and will start with a heightened law enforcement presence in the I-70 construction zone through Zanesville.

“This high-visibility enforcement effort is being conducted in close partnership with the Zanesville Police Department. Our goal is simple, to keep both motorists and workers safe,” said Lieutenant Kristi Mistovich of the Highway Patrol. “Additionally, we are working with the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office and Frazeysburg Police Department to focus enforcement in targeted areas with a history of drug-impaired driving crashes to prevent further tragedies on our roads.”

Since 2023, the Muskingum County community has seen 19 deaths related to impaired drivers. This is why part of the service initiative also includes giving drivers who are arrested for impaired driving a list of recovery support services. Arrest information will also be sent to the Mental Health and Recovery Board along with Brightview. Brightview is a local partner with law enforcement offering addiction treatment to those in need.

“This ensures individuals will have access to post-arrest resources and treatment options as part of our broader effort to support recovery and reduce repeat offense. Our connection extends beyond jurisdictions, and here we are all working together for a common goal,” Mistovich said. “Service initiatives like the one we are announcing today are one of our best practices for effective crime reduction and improved traffic safety throughout the state. The Ohio State Highway Patrol has used this model across Ohio in recent years with tremendous success. ”

Any motorists in Ohio who witnesses impaired or dangerous driving is encouraged to call the Highway Patrol at #677.
