Leaf collection begins in Zanesville

ZANESVILLE, Ohio- Leaf collection in Zanesville begins as the temperatures begin to fall.

Today residents in wards five and six will see sanitation trucks in their neighborhoods picking up piles of leaves. The workers will be out from daylight to early evening working on the removal. Jeff Shook, the Superintendent of the Street Sanitation, says anyone wanting leaves removed should make sure they’re raked and set aside.

“We would like for the folks when they rake their leaves out, to rake them between the curb and the sidewalks. Keep them out of the streets if possible because when it rains it washes the leaves down into our storm sewer and it causes issues in our storms.”

Keeping the leaves out of the street complies with a city ordinance prohibiting streets, alleys, and sidewalks from being obstructed. Residents can put the leaves in bags if they choose, but it is not necessary. They should however be mindful of the equipment used to remove the leaves.

“Please don’t park your cars beside the piles so we can get to them as the guys come in. We have equipment coming in. We don’t want to have no damage done to the cars by the equipment.”

The crews will collect the leaves through the first full week of December. After that residents are asked to put the leaves in trash bags and put them out for garbage day. To find out when the crews will collect leaves in your area visit the Street Sanitation website.
