Lightning Causes Barn’s Destruction

NASHPORT, Ohio – Officials say a lightning strike caused a barn fire early Wednesday morning.
Licking Township Fire Department received a call from Muskingum County Fire Dispatch at 8:43 a.m. in regards to a structure fire located on the property of Pleasant Valley Road.
Fire Chief, Don Goodyear, said they received mutual aid from Hanover Volunteer Fire Department, who was first to the scene. When they arrived, the barn was fully engulfed, and the roof had collapsed.

“The barn was approximately 150-years-old,” said Goodyear. “It had approximately 700 bails of hay in it and that was the only thing in the barn. The home owners request was just to let it burn. I don’t have a problem with that, they’re just going to tear it down anyway.”
Goodyear said Frazeysburg Fire Department, National Trail Volunteer Fire Department, and Dresden Fire Department also provided mutual aid.
