Limestone Valley “Mower” Speedway Opening Day
People in Perry County are finding a unique way to re-use their lawnmowers…
Owner Joe chambers started the Limestone Valley Association Racing Club about four years ago. Club members can "upgrade" riding mowers and race them at the Limestone Valley Mower Speedway.
"For me and the mowers as far as that goes, you know, we’re building a custom mower right now and I’m building a new one that’s going to have less than a thousand dollars in it. So, that’s a lot better than what I used to spend when I raced dirt track, you know, I mean, you spend a thousand dollars on a set of tires one week. So, it’s a lot different," said racer and club member Brent Vallee.
Saturday marked the opening day of the season. Drivers range from 8 to 60 years old in the family-oriented sport.
"So we all pay club fees. We don’t race for money, we come out here and race for fun, and that’s what’s neat about it. You know, as far as we’re not, you know, out here tearing stuff up. We’re out here to have a good time."
The club races every other weekend from now until the end of October.
