Literacy Campaign Continues with Wild West Day

Moorehead Avenue looked more like the wild west Saturday.

The Muskingum Valley Boy Scouting and Resource Center hosted the ‘Zane Grey Wild West Family Fun Day’ as part of a 2 month literacy campaign. Kids from the local community got the opportunity to make rope, brand their own leather book mark, and dress up like a cow boy or girl in a relay race. Executive Director of the Muskingum Valley Boy Scouts Ed Muholland said he’s happy to see the community come out for the day.

“People are having a lot of fun and I think it’s been a great effort to bring attention to literacy throughout the county, ” said Muholland.

The event is one of many in the coming months. It’s all part of On the Same Page Muskingum’s “Let’s Read Together” program. All you have to do to participate is read some of Zane Grey’s novels, talk about them with friends, and attend free events during the campaign. Muholland said reading is an essential skill for youth and adults alike.

“Reading books opens people’s horizons, helps them in the future when you need to read things,” said Muholland. “It’s just a basic skill that everybody should have and it’s a great way to escape the day to day life… read a great book. ”

The next event is next Saturday at the Stone Academy Historic Site and Museum. It will be ‘A night at the Museum.’ For a calendar of events to get involved in you can visit the On the Same Page Muskingum’s Facebook Page.
