Local Organization Holds Autism Awareness 5K

One local group gave the community the opportunity to enjoy the sun today!

The C.A.S.S. M.I.N.D. Academy had an Autism Walk at the Buckingham House on Moxahala Avenue. Those who attended enjoyed food, live music, the chance to meet an intervention specialist and an educational opportunity to learn more about what autism is. CEO Cassandra McDonald says all of the money raised goes back to the academy’s cause.

“It goes toward the tuition and the things that we need to help out Autistic School grow and this year we’ve been approved by the city and we want to build a playground so all of that money will go toward those things just to augment what we do here for our Autistic students.”

New to the event this year was a 5k run and walk. Organizer of that event, Natalie Terry explained how the idea came about.

“Well I wanted Cassandra. We had met together during rotary to get involved with the Autism event just to kind of help sponsor it so my team members and i kind of got together and decided that we wanted to help kind of raise awareness as well as raise funds to help the school.”

Terry says she feels people were very excited about being able to participate in it while enjoying the great weather Sunday.
