Veterans Honor Fallen Heroes at Sea

ZANESVILLE, OH – A local group of veterans honored those who lost their lives at sea in defense of our nation Monday.

The Disabled American Veterans Chapter 12 threw wreaths from the Veterans Memorial Bridge. Dr. David Schroder, the Commander of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 12, said the wreaths symbolize the veterans who sailed away on their final mission and never came home.

“They sacrificed too, just like the guys who were in land combat,” Schroder said. “We should always remember our ancestors, the things that they suffered. Our veterans, even the ones that didn’t go into combat, devoted years of their life, young life, in military service.”

Many people turned out for the wreath ceremony and Schroder says it’s always incredible to see the community’s support.

“It’s always amazing to me to see the support from the community,” Schroder said. “I especially want to thank the City of Zanesville and the Zanesville Police Department for stopping traffic on the bridge so that we could conduct our ceremony in safety.”

Schroder says there are already some plans in the works for next year’s ceremony.
