Locals Participate in Respect Life Sunday

Community members from local churches lined maple avenue this afternoon for the celebration of ‘Respect Life’ Sunday.

Respect Life Sunday falls on the first Sunday of October and it signifies a new year for those to peacefully speak out with pro-life beliefs. The day began with a group prayer followed by sign holding. The Muskingum Valley Right to Life organization has been doing this for 14 years now in Zanesville. We spoke with chairman of the group, Helen Fedorke about why they hold the event each year.

“We do this every year just to remind people to pray for an end to abortion and this is our 14th year and it’s an interdenominational prayer chain and we send letters out to most of the parishes, the churches, to invite them and it’s been in the paper so we try to really keep it open to everybody” she said.

This year’s turnout was expected to be around 100 people …, but Fedorke says misses the days when nearly 200 people attended. President of Right to Life, Mike Musselman whose been involved since 1975 also shared his thoughts on the day:

“Our aim is to stop abortion in this country and as I see it today, we see all the publicity on paper and in our news of these terrible things that are going on when people come in to a school or whatever and kill 12, 15, 30 people… it’s no different” he explained.

Talk of next year’s Respect for Life Sunday has already begun.
