Martin Holds Second Camp of the Summer
Minnesota Timberwolves guard and Zanesville grad Kevin Martin was back in the gym today. Martin wrapped up his sixth annual basketball camp last week at Winland Gymnasium, but this summer, twice is nice for the NBA star.
Thirty-two high schoolers were on hand for Martin’s second camp, which featured pro-style workouts for boys and girls ages 14-17.
“They’re in high school so they enjoyed it a lot more–being separated from the little kids this year–because they got a lot more work in without us having to babysit a lot,” Martin said.
More work meant more coaching from the camp’s counselors, which included former West Liberty star Cedric Harris and current Hilltopper Kailee Howe.
“We get to show them some new moves that we can’t show the younger kids,” said Martin’s friend and camp counselor, T.J. Anderson.
The MVP of this week’s camp was Zanesville sophomore Aronde Myers, who has now participated in both camps.
“It was definitely different,” Myers said. “When I was little we dribbled the ball… but now it’s real hard work.”
As for Martin continuing to hold a second camp, the 11-year NBA veteran says the odds are good.
“(The kids) enjoyed (the camp) so that makes me enjoy it so I’ll probably do it,” he said with a smile.
With two successful camps in the books, it’s back to work for the 32-year-old. He returns to his home in Florida on Thursday to prepare for his third season with the Timberwolves.
