ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Reading at home can be difficult if there are too many distractions. That’s why the Muskingum County Library System (MCLS) is hosting a Silent Reading Book Club.

The John McIntire Library will host the quiet reading time event on Wednesday, May 20, from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. According to Assistant Youth Librarian Alex Simmons, the event offers a calm and relaxing space to read while inviting families to see what the library has to offer.

“Our library offers a whole lot of other things besides books and reading, so it gets you in the space. It can get your families comfortable with the space. It also gives you the chance to learn about different books,” Simmons said. “So, one of the things that I do after each group is I figure out what books were read and I make a little flyer for next one. So, if you liked this one, you know, this is what so-and-so was reading last time and if you like it, give it a try, if it looks interesting, give it a try. ”

Towards the end of the Silent Reading Book Club session, participants are invited to talk about their book and share their thoughts. Simmons says that this creates an opportunity for potential speakers and listeners alike.

“Obviously, that is a, if you want to look at is as, a public speaking opportunity you can. But also, just gives kids who are really interested in their book or genre or whatever a chance to share it and another opportunity for kids who may not know what they want to read, to listen and see if maybe they want to read that book in the future,” Simmons said.

Silent Reading Book Club events will also be held at the Roseville Library this Friday at 4 p.m. and at the New Concord Library on May 21 at 4 p.m. You can visit the MCLS website to learn more about the Silent Reading Book Club and other events planned by the library system.
